Seven Passes and the 2010 FIFA World Cup

The FIFA-dung beetle

Roger Titley of Hoekwil, a very talented designer, developed the enormous dung beetle that appeared in the opening ceremony of the Fifa World Cup soccer tournament. Seven Passes youth were involved in the early practices and two young people from the area traveled with Roger to Johannesburg and performed in the ceremony.

According to Roger the area co-ordinator, Cedrick Buys, “was an enormous help in finding people and having them at rehearsals on time. He even got involved in some of the warm-up dancing and proved himself to be quite a mover!”.

The two young people who accompanied Roger to Johannesburg were Sury Makwena and Jonty Hendriks. Roger reported that “they fitted in extremely well in Jhb and did not let themselves down among the 6 professional dancers that we used. The Jhb crew embraced these Capies and shared many dance moves and City stories with them. They were in Joburg for three weeks and got to see the opening match SA/Mexico Live!” Enjoy these pictures of the process.

As a result of this project the Seven Passes will receive a generous donation from Roger, for which we are deeply grateful.
